Leader of Others is the management transition from Individual Contributor to Front-Line Manager. This step in development requires first-time managers to make major transitions from leading themselves into leading groups of others. Particularly challenging for first-time managers is that they now become accountable for doing work through others. They have likely been recognized as Individual Contributors in the past, and it is difficult to give up the tasks that initially led to their previous accomplishments.

Participants in the Leading Others Program will receive takeaways in the following areas:

  • Adding value as a Leader of Others within the organization
  • Freeing up time to lead
  • Setting objectives and prioritizing tasks
  • Delegating and following up effectively
  • Coaching and developing direct reports
  • Assessing and improving performance
  • Selecting leaders and building a team

Training for the skills, time application and work values of the new Leader of Others is important to prevent the new leader from stumbling.  This level of training puts measures into place to ease the transition of people to Leaders of Others, and these leaders can then be held responsible for the success of the Individual Contributors they manage. Your Front-Line Managers are the main sources of leaders for all other management systems, so it is vital that they are prepared and not clogging your leadership pipeline.

Target audience

The target audience for the program is leaders of others with a minimum of 3 – 4 individual contributors as direct reports.  When you attend the program you must have been in your current position for at least 6 months.  It is critical for the program that all participants meet above criteria as this is an essential prerequisite for being able to base the program on the participants’ own experiences rather than theoretical cases.

Program Flow

Approximately 5 weeks prior to the program you will participate in a 360 degree analysis, which relates 100% to the content of the program.  You will automatically receive the report when all respondents have answered it.  3 weeks prior to the program you will receive preparation materials.  You should expect to spend 3 – 5 hours on preparation.  The program itself is a 4-day intensive program.  Approximately 6 months after the  program you will again participate in the 360 analysis, which provides you with the opportunity to follow up on your own development.
